Exactly 2 months after leading the Indian team to its 3rd ICC T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar Yadav has been stripped off as India’s T20I captain with immediate effect. It comes after Surya’s poor run of form which saw him score just 183 runs in 13 matches for the Mumbai Indians who finished 9th in the 2026 Indian Premier League season.
Suryakumar Yadav is also likely to lose his spot in the T20I side because of the same reason with the team management now gearing up to appoint a new captain on a long-term basis. A lot of names have been thrown into the ring to replace Surya but nothing is concrete as of yet.
The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan are all very much in the race but things will get clearer once the selection committee announces India’s squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. India will play 2 T20s in Belfast before crossing borders for a 5-match T20I and 3-match ODI series over the next two months.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir in consensus to sack Suryakumar Yadav
According to an Indian Express report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Suryakumar Yadav’s removal from captaincy has been internally discussed for quite some time now. In consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir as well as the selection committee, the apex governing body has decided against giving a lifeline to Surya.
The source confirmed that BCCI does acknowledge Suryakumar Yadav’s excellent work as India’s T20I captain but given his poor run of form, whether in the T20 World Cup or IPL 2026, the board has finally decided to move on. We have also learnt that Surya won’t be considered for selection either, meaning we could see some new faces being introduced for the Ireland and England tour.
This message will be conveyed to Suryakumar Yadav soon.
“The selection committee, BCCI and team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on. Under Surya’s captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup but keeping his form and future in mind, they felt it’s time to move on. He won’t be considered for selection, and the decision will be conveyed to Surya soon.” – the BCCI source said as quoted by the Indian Express.
Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy record
Notably, Suryakumar Yadav had a flawless record as India’s T20I captain since taking over from Rohit Sharma after the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.
The 35-year-old will leave as one of India’s most successful captains in the format. Under his leadership, the Men in Blue lost just 8 matches and won 40 games from a total of 52 outings. India did not lose a single bilateral series since Surya took over and he also led the side to Asia Cup 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026 triumphs.
This development will be made public soon, most likely during India’s squad announcement for tours of Ireland and England.
