U-17 AFCON: Tanzania coach cautious despite strong start
Following the Tanzania U-17 national team’s impressive 3-0 victory over Mozambique to begin their 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (U-17 AFCON) campaign in Morocco, the Serengeti Boys technical bench has called for focus and improvement ahead of their next crucial group stage match against Angola.

Speaking after the match, the coach admitted that despite the convincing scoreline, the encounter was not easy as Mozambique posed several challenges, especially physically.
He explained that Mozambique’s players were physically stronger and at times slowed the pace of the game, creating pressure on Tanzania’s young squad. However, he praised his players for remaining composed and taking advantage of the opportunities they created throughout the match.
The coach noted that although Tanzania secured an important win, there are still several areas that require improvement before facing Angola in the next fixture.
He described Angola as a much more dangerous opponent, particularly because of their speed, aggressive attacking style and ability to transition quickly in offensive situations.
According to the coach, the technical bench will now focus on correcting mistakes observed against Mozambique while preparing the players tactically and mentally for the challenge ahead.
He stressed that the team must remain disciplined and avoid becoming overconfident after the opening victory, insisting that the tournament is still at an early stage.
The coach also called upon Tanzanians to continue supporting and praying for the team as they pursue their dream of reaching the knockout stage for the first time in history.
“We thank God for the victory, but the work is not finished yet. We still have important matches ahead and we must continue improving,” he said.

Serengeti Boys currently top Group C with three points following their win over Mozambique, while Mali and Angola each collected one point after drawing 0-0 in their opening match.
Tanzania will face Angola U17 in their second group stage match on May 17 at 16:00 EAT, with another victory likely to strengthen their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage and potentially securing a place at the FIFA U17 World Cup.
The young Tanzanian side arrived in Morocco aiming to make history after previous appearances in 2017, 2019 and 2025 ended at the group stage.
Their confident performance against Mozambique has already raised hopes among football fans that Serengeti Boys can emerge as one of the tournament’s surprise teams if they maintain their discipline and continue improving in the remaining matches.
PGA Championship: Potgieter leads alongside Scheffler after opening day
Rising South African star Aldrich Potgieter shared the lead after the first round of the year’s second Major, the PGA Championship, at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania following Thursday’s opening round.
The 21-year-old fired an opening round three-under-par 67 which included three birdies and three bogeys.
“I definitely left myself in really good positions on the green, made some long putts, so it was nice the putter was warm,” Potgieter told reporters afterwards.
He shared the lead with six others at three-under-par, including defending PGA champion, Scottie Scheffler.
The next-best South African, on a stacked leaderboard, was Garrick Higgo, who recovered from being penalised two shots for arriving late for his tee time to record a round of 69, one-under-par. He is tied 15th, two shots back of the leaders.
Higgo made four birdies and one bogey after his opening hole double, following the penalisation.
McIlroy struggles
SA Open champion, Casey Jarvis, was next best of the South Africans on level-par 70. He made two birdies, an eagle and four bogeys. He is tied for 34th place but only three shots back of the leaders.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout is also in range of the leaders, five shots back after opening with a 72, but he’s tied 67th.
Jayden Schaper, a two time winner on the DP World Tour recently and on debut in Major golf, shot an opening 75 to be tied 120th, but also not that far back, eight off the leaders.
Rory McIlroy had a day to forget with a four-over 74, following four straight bogeys at the end of his round, to be tied 105th, while Bryson DeChambeau fired a 76.
Better scores were recorded by Xander Schauffele (68), Shane Lowry (68), Cameron Smith (69), Brooks Koepka (69), Jordan Spieth (69), Jon Rahm (69), Hideki Matsuyama (70) and Justin Rose (70).
Les dépenses publiques en hausse, les recettes fiscales en recul
Le premier trimestre 2026 révèle une situation budgétaire contrastée pour l'État. Alors que les recettes fiscales enregistrent un léger ralentissement par rapport à l'an dernier, les dépenses publiques demeurent fortement orientées vers les charges de fonctionnement et le service de la dette, dans un contexte marqué par les cyclones Fytia et Gezani ainsi que par un remaniement gouvernemental intervenu en mars.
Selon le compte rendu de l'exécution budgétaire du ministère de l'Économie et des Finances, les recettes fiscales ont atteint 2 158 milliards d'ariary à fin mars 2026, soit un taux de réalisation de 19,2 % contre 21,3 % au premier trimestre 2025. Cette baisse de 2,1 points est principalement liée à la contre-performance des recettes douanières. Ces dernières se sont établies à 860 milliards d'ariary, avec un taux de réalisation de seulement 17 %, contre plus de 22 % l'an dernier.
Les recettes fiscales internes affichent néanmoins une certaine résilience. Elles ont progressé de 12,4 %, soit une hausse de 143 milliards d'ariary par rapport à la même période de 2025, grâce notamment à l'augmentation des recettes issues de la TVA, des impôts sur les revenus salariaux et des droits d'accise. Les recettes internes ont atteint 1 298 milliards d'ariary, correspondant à un taux de réalisation de 20,9 %.
Le gouvernement explique la baisse des recettes douanières par les perturbations provoquées par le cyclone Gezani, qui a endommagé plusieurs infrastructures portuaires et ralenti les échanges commerciaux. La baisse des prix des produits pétroliers sur le marché international a également pesé sur les recettes liées aux hydrocarbures.
Du côté des dépenses, l'État a engagé 2 651 milliards d'ariary sur une enveloppe globale de 19 645 milliards, soit un taux d'exécution de 13,5 %, légèrement inférieur au niveau observé en 2025.
Le Budget général concentre l'essentiel des dépenses avec 2 195 milliards d'ariary engagés. La rubrique la plus marquante reste celle des intérêts de la dette, dont le taux d'engagement atteint 97,6 %, représentant 956 milliards d'ariary. Cette hausse importante traduit le poids croissant du service de la dette dans les finances publiques.
Les dépenses de personnel demeurent également élevées. La masse salariale du budget central a atteint 982,6 milliards d'ariary au premier trimestre, soit 20,2 % des crédits prévus dans la Loi de finances initiale.
À l'inverse, les dépenses d'investissement restent très faibles. Les investissements sur financement interne n'ont été exécutés qu'à hauteur de 2,3 %, révélant un démarrage difficile des projets publics. Certains secteurs clés, comme les infrastructures, la santé ou l'éducation, affichent des niveaux d'engagement particulièrement bas.
L'analyse sectorielle montre toutefois quelques évolutions positives. Les dépenses liées à la protection sociale et à la sécurité publique progressent par rapport à 2025, notamment sous l'effet des actions d'urgence engagées après les catastrophes naturelles.
Le premier trimestre 2026 illustre les difficultés de l'État à maintenir un équilibre budgétaire dans un environnement marqué par les crises climatiques et les réorganisations institutionnelles. Si certaines recettes internes résistent, le ralentissement des recettes douanières et la faible exécution des investissements risquent de peser sur la croissance et les projets de développement au cours des prochains mois.
