Legend reveals what Pirates must do on Saturday

Orlando Pirates are now one victory away from potentially ending one of the longest Betway Premiership title droughts in the club’s modern history. ipl-cricket.in

The Buccaneers host Durban City at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, knowing the championship door has suddenly swung wide open after Mamelodi Sundowns stumbled at the finish line.

Sundowns suffered a dramatic 3-2 defeat to TS Galaxy in Mbombela, a result that froze the Brazilians on 68 points after completing their league campaign. It was the kind of collapse nobody saw coming. For weeks, the title looked destined to remain in Tshwane yet again.

Few people understand the weight of expectation at the Buccaneers better than Jele.
He spent 16 years wearing the black and white jersey, building a legacy that secured his place among the club’s all-time greats. Jele eventually became the most capped player in Orlando Pirates history after surpassing Nigerian goalkeeper William Okpara’s long-standing record, finishing with 401 appearances for the Buccaneers.

His trophy cabinet reflects that golden period. Jele lifted back-to-back league titles in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons, while also winning two Nedbank Cups, two MTN8 trophies and a Telkom Knockout title.

“All I can say is, the previous talk when we talked, both of us, I said it’s up to the players, up to Orlando Pirates to take this league. Yesterday’s results also show that it’s up to them,” Jele told Soccer Laduma.

“If they get the last three points, they are crowned champions of the Premier League. It’s been a while for Orlando Pirates to lift this trophy. I think now it’s very possible.”

JELE CALLS FOR CALM HEADS IN TITLE DECIDER

Jele also warned that the final hurdle could become the most difficult one mentally.

“They just need to put in more extra work in the last game. I would say the last game because every game is a cup game for them. In this last game that is coming on the weekend, they need to put in more extra work and believe in themselves that they can take it,” said Jele.

“The most important thing they must enjoy. It’s their time to enjoy football. That’s the most important thing. They need to enjoy the moment,” he concluded.

Manyonga’s Emotional Return and Nkoana’s Sprint Silver Lead Team SA’s Three-Medal Haul on Day 2

ACCRA, GHANA – Team South Africa continued its strong showing at the 2026 African Athletics Championships, adding three more medals to their tally on an action-packed Day 2. The day was defined by a historic comeback in the field, a photo-finish thriller on the track, and consistent progression in the middle-distance events.

Manyonga Reclaims Continental Glory

In what is undoubtedly one of the most compelling stories of the championships, Luvo Manyonga completed a spectacular return to the pinnacle of African athletics. The former Olympic silver medalist secured the gold medal in the men’s long jump final, proving he is once again the man to beat on the continent.

Speaking after his victory, an emotional Manyonga reflected on his journey back to the top. “To be honest, mixed emotions, grateful to be back,” he said. “God’s given me so many opportunities; I’m just grateful to Him to have these opportunities.”

Nkoana Snatches Silver in 100m Thriller

The men’s 100m final provided the most dramatic moment of the evening. Bradley Nkoana took the hard road to the podium; after finishing third in a tough semifinal, he relied on his time to advance as a non-automatic qualifier.

Starting from the outside in Lane 1, Nkoana produced a massive surge to challenge for the title. In a finish so close it was impossible to separate the runners with the naked eye, Nkoana was awarded the silver medal with a time of 10.311s. He finished just behind Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme (10.25s) and narrowly edged out Nigeria’s Chidera Ezeakor (10.318s) in a tense photo finish.

Holtzhausen Secures Bronze in the Hammer Throw

The medals continued to flow in the field events as Leandri Holtzhausen delivered a podium performance in the women’s hammer throw. Holtzhausen claimed the bronze medal for South Africa in a competitive final that saw Algeria’s Zahra Tatar successfully defend her title with a mark of 69.82m.

Viljoen Dominates to Reach 400m Final

On the track, Marlie Viljoen looks to be in the form of her life. Following her strong opening heat, she returned for the women’s 400m semifinals and signaled her intent by winning her heat convincingly against a high-quality field. She safely booked her spot in the final and remains a top prospect for further South African silverware.

Grit and Heartbreak in the Sprints and Multi-Events

It wasn’t all podium finishes, as several South Africans fought through grueling schedules. In the men’s decathlon, Morne Van As concluded his ten-event campaign with a massive effort, ultimately just missing out on a podium position in a deeply competitive field.

In the 100m semifinals, both Joviale Mbisha and Mihlali Xotyeni saw their individual campaigns come to an end. Despite strong performances in the opening rounds, both athletes narrowly missed out on qualifying for their respective finals in two of the fastest semifinal sessions in recent championship history.

With the medal count rising and several key athletes advancing to finals, Team South Africa heads into Day 3 with significant momentum.

Motsepe maintains East Africa on course to host 2027 AFCON

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has downplayed fears that East Africa is not ready to host 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The opening match will be played on Saturday, June 19th, and the final on Saturday, July 17th, as per the dates approved by the FIFA Council at its recent meeting in Vancouver, Canada.

CAF will announce the country that will host the opening match and the final in due course. The AFCON PAMOJA 2027 is the first to be hosted by three countries, presenting a unique opportunity for CAF and African football to reach over 400 million people in the East African region.

Motsepe plays down 2027 AFCON delays

“Are there areas where there’s room for improvement? Absolutely,” Motsepe told BBC Sports in Nairobi.

“But the commitment, the support from President Ruto (of Kenya), from Madam [President] Samia [Suluhu Hassan] in Tanzania, from President Museveni (of Uganda) is enormous.

“We’ve got people from CAF, who are permanently based in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and they are everyday working on the preparations and making sure that the Afcon which is going to take place in June 2027 is going to be successful.”

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Hussein Mohammed backed Motsepe’s comments by saying: “I have no doubt East Africa is ready and will deliver the best AFCON the continent and the world has ever seen.

Motsepe attended the Africa Forward Summit and inspected preparations for the PAMOJA 2027 AFCON, which Kenya is co-hosting.

“We do not intend to compete with Morocco as the Minister has alluded to. We are unique in East Africa and we will deliver a unique AFCON that has never been seen.

“In this regard, it is not just the hardware, being the facilities and stadiums but also the software. East Africa is known for its hospitality, we are known to be a hardworking population and we are known for delivering quality and we experienced that with CHAN.”

The 2027 AFCON will come after Morocco hosted the 2025 edition, which was widely praised as one of the best-organised in history.
